Sawkhill Cup 2020

The 69th Sawkill Cup (Presidents XI) Charity Match, sponsored by Richardson Transport Ltd, was played on Sunday 23rd August 2020 at Stamford Bridge Cricket Club.

The day was also one of a number of events held by the club this year to raise funds for the York Magnolia Cancer Centre at York Hospital.

SBCC XI skipper Matt Beckett won the toss and elected to bat on an excellent looking wicket.

A solid start from Kyle Waite & Ben Pearson took the score past 50 without loss.

A couple of wickets from talented young spinner Tom Brown (Clifton Alliance) saw the run rate drop until the returning Max Maciver scored a typically stylish 35 before being stumped by Adam Sutcliffe and providing a first of 3 wickets for Will Wade (Acomb).

Wickets followed at regular intervals before a partnership of 50 from Liam Easton and James Keast (49) took the total to 190-8 off 35 overs.

A huge deluge at the tea interval caused a delay and clean up operation which saw the Jack Bolam (Dunnington) skippered Presidents XI chase a revised total of 132 from 20 overs.

This target looked a long way off as hard hitting opening batsman Charlie Allott (Nawton Grange) was caught behind first ball off the bowling of former England Under 19 fast bowler Dan Houghton.

The score crept along nicely as current Yorkshire League North leading run scorer Wade and Dunnington’s Harrison Mussell played aggressively taking the score past 70 when Wade was removed by Johnny Rawsthorne.

Despite a cameo from Andrew Sharman (Pickering), the innings never got going again as spinners Kev Murphy, James Keast and Rawsthorne took control to help deliver a victory for the SBCC XI by 16 runs.

Many thanks to the Sawkill Family and to club sponsor Richardson Transport LTD for the match shirts, their support on the day and throughout the year.

Proceeds of the day are being donated to the amazing York Magnolia Cancer Centre in appreciation for the care they provide to so many people diagnosed with cancer.
